Unlike at most college radio stations, getting started at WAMH is a simple, easy process. By following the steps below, you can have you own show in a two weeks!
First and foremost, come visit the station! We have office hours Sundays 8-9 PM and Thursdays 11:30-1 PM (these are subject to change–check back in the studio’s front window for updated information) and we are located upstairs in Keefe, right above Schwemm’s.
1. Read the DJ Manual. It may seem daunting at first, but all of the procedures are really easy once you’re in the station. The manual can be found here: WAMH DJ Manual 2015 Edit
2. Sit in on a radio show! Starting September 21st we will be broadcasting. Check the programming schedule and e-mail the DJ from any show that interests you- don’t be shy! They were once a pre-J, just like you. You don’t have to stay for the entire 2 hour show, just long enough to get a feel of how they run their show and familiarize yourself with the equipment.
3. Attend the Pre-J show, which is on Saturday 2-4 PM. This show is low-key and fun, with a whole group of pre-Js. It’s meant to give you one final overview on how to work the equipment and be successful as a DJ. Contact Blaine Werner for scheduling.
4. Take the DJ test. Come in during office hours and take a short written test to prove your DJ prowess. It takes around 30 minutes and is based primarily on the DJ manual (Note: as far as I know, no one has failed).
Once you’ve passed the test, you’re officially a DJ! Get your hands on a show request form, fill it out, and drop it off in WAMH and we’ll work you into the schedule with your very own weekly 1-2 hour spot!
The bulk of WAMH’s membership comes from the DJ side of things, but we are always looking for help on the clerical end. Our non-DJ positions include:
